According to police, a Houston man beat another man to death because he mistook him for someone who had thrown a beer bottle at them.

Lansello Martinez, 22, allegedly assaulted Ye Myint Aung, 38, at a gas station after a beer bottle placed on the hood of Martinez’ car fell off as he drove away, according to ABC-13.

According to ABC-13, the bottle was placed on the car’s hood by the passenger, and when it fell off, Martinez assumed it had been thrown at the car. Martinez began attacking random gas station patrons who fled before advancing on Aung.

“The suspect struck the male’s head approximately 20 times, causing blunt force trauma,” officers reported. The incident occurred on May 23, and Aung was pronounced dead on May 25. Martinez was arrested on June 5.

According to ABC 13, Aung was beaten and his body was left behind the gas station for 12 hours. An ambulance was not dispatched until Lakisha Wilks discovered Aung’s body around 9:30 p.m., with several regular customers standing nearby.

“I said, ‘Something is definitely wrong,'” she remembers. “They said, ‘Well, he’s been here since 9:30 a.m.'” I replied, “No, no, no.” Something is not right. They said, ‘Well, whatever you do, do not call 911.’ And I said no. “Whatever I do, I’ll call 911,” Wilks told the station.

Despite Wilks’ efforts, Aung was pronounced dead in the hospital.

“He could have been saved, I truly believed,” Wliks said to the station. “He could’ve been saved! I didn’t get there until 9:30 p.m.

Martinez, according to police, has been charged with murder and booked into the Harris County Jail.
