Marquette, Michigan – Swimmers in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are being advised to avoid Lake Superior on Sunday, as strong northerly winds create dangerous waves along the beaches of Marquette and Alger counties.
The National Weather Service warns of a high swim risk, which could make conditions deadly, particularly near breakwalls and piers.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, showers stopped Saturday night, leaving behind breezy winds and cooler air. Sunday’s temperatures will range from the upper 60s to the low 70s, but choppy waters will remain the main hazard along the shore.
Residents of Marquette, Munising, and the surrounding communities should avoid swimming and instead seek safer inland recreation. The high swim risk is expected to last all day Sunday. By Sunday night, thunderstorms are expected to move into the region, bringing heavy rain into Monday morning.
Travelers on US 41 and M-28 should be prepared for reduced visibility and slick roads early Monday. Power outages are also possible as the storms intensify. Officials advise residents to secure outdoor items and prepare for changing weather.
Thunderstorms are expected to continue through Monday, with more updates coming as the system develops.
