Robbinsdale Man Sentenced to Over 15 Years for Deadly Gang-Related Ambush in Minneapolis
MINNEAPOLIS — A 20-year-old man from Robbinsdale has been sentenced to more than 15 years in prison for his role in a deadly ambush-style shooting that prosecutors say was tied to gang violence.
Jahon Ronnell Lynch was convicted of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder for a shooting that took place on November 6, 2023. At the time of the crime, Lynch was just 18 years old.
According to court documents, Lynch was one of three individuals who jumped out of a vehicle near 33rd and Dupont Avenues North in Minneapolis and opened fire on a group of men. The group tried to run, but one of them—a 20-year-old man—was chased down and shot multiple times. He later died at North Memorial Hospital.
Witnesses told investigators that the shooters emerged from a blue car and began firing without warning. One of the victim’s friends said they ran into a backyard where the shooting occurred. Another said the only motive he could think of was a gang rivalry—Lynch was reportedly part of the “Lows” gang, while the victim belonged to the rival “Highs.”
Minneapolis homicide detectives used surveillance footage to track the vehicle’s license plate. Days later, they spotted the blue Toyota Camry, which was reported stolen. After a short chase, two suspects—including Lynch—were found hiding under a porch. Police confirmed Lynch was the car’s driver.
Phone records later placed Lynch at the scene of the shooting, further tying him to the crime.
On Thursday, Judge Carolina Lamas sentenced Lynch to 188 months (about 15.6 years) at the St. Cloud Correctional Facility. He was given credit for 551 days already served. After his release, Lynch will be prohibited from owning or using firearms and must submit a DNA sample.
