Kentucky authorities arrested three people after discovering children and a disabled adult living in what officers described as the worst conditions they’d ever seen.
Amy Nichols, 30, is accused of child abuse, knowingly neglecting a disabled adult, and animal cruelty.
Robert Ransdell, 38, and Matthew Hardin, 26, are charged with child abuse, complicity in neglecting a disabled adult, and animal cruelty.
According to arrest citations obtained by local CBS affiliate WKYT and Fox affiliate WDKY, cops responded to a home in Harrodsburg, about 30 miles southwest of Lexington, on June 10 in connection with a child neglect investigation.
According to police, the home housed three children under the age of twelve, as well as a disadvantaged adult with the mental capacity of a sixth grader.
When cops walked inside, they were met with a strong odor of feces and ammonia, according to the citation.
“The floor was covered in feces and all surfaces were covered in garbage such as rotten food,” police reported. “The refrigerator had a lock hanging from it and contained rotten food and cockroaches and none of the food I observed in the house was safe to eat.”
One of the children reportedly stated that they had not eaten lunch or dinner and had only eaten cereal.
According to police, the home also housed three dogs and five cats.
According to the citations, cops deemed the home uninhabitable because it posed a risk of serious illness or death to anyone living inside. Officers described it as the worst condition they’d ever seen inside a home.
All three suspects are still in the Jessamine County Jail without bond. Their court date is scheduled for June 26.
