North Carolina has introduced several new and updated requirements for renewing your driver’s license in 2025. The state’s Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) now offers more options but also enforces stricter documentation and testing standards, so it’s important for drivers to be prepared before their license expires.
Renewal Methods and Eligibility
Drivers in North Carolina can renew their licenses in person, online, by mail (in specific circumstances), or at self-service kiosks. However, you can only renew online every other renewal cycle—if you renewed online last time, you must visit an NCDMV office in person this time.
Licenses can be renewed up to six months before expiration and up to two years after, but if your license has been expired for more than two years, you must go through the full application process again.
Required Documentation
To renew in person, you must bring proof of identity and date of birth, your Social Security number, and two documents verifying your current North Carolina address. If you are applying for a REAL ID (which is recommended for federal identification purposes), you’ll need to provide additional documentation showing legal presence in the U.S.
Testing Requirements
All in-person renewals now require you to pass a vision test to ensure you meet the state’s minimum vision standards. You’ll also need to pass a sign recognition test, which checks your understanding of road signs by color and shape. If you are renewing a license that has been expired for a significant period, you may also be required to take a written knowledge test.
Fees and License Validity
The renewal fee is $5.50 per year, and the duration of your new license depends on your age: licenses are valid for eight years for adults aged 18 to 65 and five years for those 66 and older. After your renewal, you’ll receive a temporary license on the spot, and your permanent license will arrive by mail within 20 days.
Special Rules for Out-of-State and Military Residents
If you are temporarily living outside North Carolina or are an active-duty military member, you may be eligible to renew by mail. This option is only available once in your lifetime (twice for active-duty military) and requires you to provide a vision statement and a National Sex Offender Affidavit, along with proof of a permanent North Carolina address and a license expired less than two years ago.
What’s New for 2025
North Carolina is piloting self-service kiosks at select locations, allowing for faster and more convenient renewals. Additionally, a bill has been proposed to temporarily extend the renewal period for certain licenses to ease DMV backlogs, but as of mid-2025, standard renewal rules remain in effect. The state is also preparing to launch digital driver’s licenses, with a target rollout date in July 2025.
To avoid delays or complications, North Carolina drivers should check their eligibility for online renewal, gather the required documents, and be ready for vision and sign tests. With new technology and stricter standards, staying informed will ensure a smooth renewal process and keep you legally on the road
