A husband and wife from Florida were recently arrested after their children were discovered to be “severely malnourished,” according to Sunshine State police.

Charmy Milfort, 34, and Gabrielle Milfort, 32, are accused of one count each of child neglect without great bodily harm, according to Miami-Dade County court records.

According to the North Miami Police Department, the couple was arrested on Wednesday, but charges have been pending for some time.

According to law enforcement, the criminal investigation into what happened at the Milfort residence began at least on June 24. On that day, the Florida Department of Children and Families took custody of the couple’s two boys, ages four and seven.

What law enforcement allegedly learned after that was shocking.

The older boy was never enrolled in school, and his younger brother weighed only 15 pounds, according to arrest reports obtained by The Miami Herald and Miami-based NBC affiliate WTVJ.

The children were taken from their parents after they took them to Jackson North Medical Center following what authorities say was a long period of medical neglect.

The children “were not being fed properly,” according to police.

According to the arrest reports, both boys were fed a steady diet of a pediatric vanilla shake, pureed banana, water, and multigrain rice. As a result, both were malnourished, with the younger boy constipated due to his diet, according to police.

Doctors discovered that the 4-year-old had broken his arm and leg and was unable to walk or speak. However, the older boy did not fare as well.

According to police, the 7-year-old is “non-verbal” and was never trained to use the restroom, so he continues to wear diapers.

More Law&Crime coverage: Nurse allegedly left her 1-year-old in an unlocked car in the restaurant parking lot while the rest of the family ate dinner inside.

Child welfare authorities claim the children had not seen a doctor since 2022, when the parents were referred to a specialist.

According to police, the parents didn’t follow up until this summer, when they suspected their children had developmental disorders.

Law enforcement said the couple’s other options did not align with their years-long decision to forego their children’s medical care.

“In January 2025, the defendant and co-defendant leased an apartment that was furnished, and they financed a vehicle in February 202,” according to one document. “Those finances could have been utilized to fund the medical care of victim 1 and victim 2.”

According to the arrest reports, the children’s health has improved since they were placed under medical care.

The wife has been released from jail.

The husband is currently detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and is wanted on several unrelated charges.
