Waynoka, Oklahoma – Minor flooding is affecting low-lying areas near the Cimarron River in Waynoka and surrounding counties, with a Flood Warning continuing through midday Wednesday.
The National Weather Service in Norman reports that the Cimarron River reached 8.1 feet as of 1:30 a.m., slightly above the 8.0-foot flood stage. The warning is in effect until 12 p.m. today, with water levels expected to fall below flood stage by late morning.
Flooding Impact and Affected Areas
The minor flooding is primarily affecting agricultural land, rural roads, and low-lying areas near the riverbanks. Areas including Woods, Woodward, and Major counties, particularly near U.S. Highway 281 south of Little Sahara State Park, are seeing the impacts. Residents in Freedom, Orienta, and Waynoka should use caution as the water level remains above normal for now.
Safety Warnings and Travel Precautions
Though the flooding is classified as minor, drivers are urged to avoid submerged roads and to obey barricades. The National Weather Service’s “Turn around, don’t drown” advice is especially important, as conditions may be hazardous, particularly overnight or when visibility is poor.
With no additional rain expected in the immediate forecast, river levels should gradually return to normal. However, residents are advised to stay updated with the latest warnings from the National Weather Service in case conditions change.
While the flooding is minor and expected to subside by midday Wednesday, residents should remain cautious and stay informed for any potential updates.
