Paper SSI Checks Are Disappearing in September and Here’s What You Must Do ASAP

On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) distributed Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments to nearly 7.5 million beneficiaries. While millions rejoiced over the arrival of their funds, a vulnerable group faced a new reality: more than 521,000 people who still rely on physical checks began an uncertain wait.

These recipients—senior citizens, people with disabilities, and families with children living in extreme poverty—may face delays of up to three business days due to limitations imposed by the US Postal Service (USPS). Internal restructuring in cities such as New York and Los Angeles has resulted in extended deadlines.

“The people who need these benefits the most are also the most affected by any delay,” says Susan Halberg, an analyst at the Center for Retirement Policy. “A day’s delay can mean going hungry.”

SSI paper check payments will be eliminated: how to transition to digital ways

For the past ten years, the Social Security Administration has promoted electronic methods. Since 2013, new beneficiaries must use direct deposit, which now accounts for 99% of payments. “Electronic funds always arrive on the first day, even on weekends,” says an SSA spokesperson. Those who are behind can make changes to their funds at ssa.gov, by calling 1-800-772-1213, or at local offices.

However, patience is running out: a federal executive order states that paper checks will be eliminated beginning September 30, 2025, with limited exceptions. Those who insist on receiving them must request a waiver prior to that date. Experts are concerned that thousands, particularly seniors in rural areas with limited banking access, will be left vulnerable if they do not regularize their status.

A Postal System under Pressure

The delays are not coincidental. The USPS is facing budget cuts and logistical issues that affect entire areas, including Social Security payments ranging from retirement and disability (SSDI) to SSI benefits. Beneficiaries in the Midwest reported five-day waits in June. The Social Security Administration recommends reporting lost checks after 10 business days, but the replacement process can take weeks.

Meanwhile, community organizations are stepping up their efforts. In Cleveland, volunteers are assisting migrants in opening Direct Express card accounts. In Phoenix, senior centers are hosting digital banking workshops. “It’s a race against time,” admits social worker María López. “September will come quickly.”

2025 remaining payment schedule for SSI recipients

In the coming months, the SSA confirmed that payments will continue to be distributed on the first business day of each month, with adjustments if the first falls on a weekend.

Payments for August 2025 will be issued on Friday, August 1, which is a weekday. In September 2025, SSI payments will arrive on Monday, September 1. Moving forward, payments for October 2025 will be made on Wednesday, October 1.

Due to November 1st being a Saturday in 2025, the payment will be made on Friday, October 31. The December 2025 SSI payments are scheduled for Monday, December 1st, with the January 2026 payment issued on Wednesday, January 31st.
