A North Carolina couple is in jail after police say they seriously injured their 2-month-old baby.

Marion L. Hoffman III, 27, and his girlfriend, Brittany Marie Zito, 24, were arrested on Tuesday after an investigation began when they took their 2-month-old baby to the emergency room in July.

The baby was discovered to have several broken bones, including a skull fracture and a broken femur, according to arresting documents reviewed by Law&Crime. Police said Hoffman and Zito were responsible for the injuries, and both parents were arrested.

Hoffman and Zito brought their baby to the hospital on July 3, according to local NBC affiliate WECT. According to the arrest warrants for both parents, the baby suffered a skull fracture, a broken right femur, and five broken ribs.

According to the TV station, detectives from the Wilmington Police Department collaborated with the Department of Social Services on their investigation, which resulted in arrest warrants for the baby’s parents.

Hoffman and Zito appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday and are being held in the New Hanover County Jail on a $300,000 bond for felony charges of intentional child abuse with serious physical injury and negligent child abuse with serious physical injury.

They are both set to appear in court again on September 4. The baby’s whereabouts and condition are unclear.
