Philadelphia, PA – Life-threatening heat is set to blanket the Philadelphia region on Friday, with heat indices soaring up to 105°F, coupled with the threat of severe thunderstorms during the evening commute.
Residents across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware are urged to take immediate action as the National Weather Service issues an Extreme Heat Watch and Heat Advisory, with warnings in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
Dangerous Heat and Humidity Threatening Health
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, the extreme heat and humidity will put many people at risk for heat-related illnesses, especially the elderly, young children, and those without access to air conditioning.
The heat will make it feel over 100°F, raising the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Residents are advised to stay indoors during peak heat, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
Thunderstorms and Severe Weather Threat
Along with the extreme heat, scattered severe thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon and evening, bringing damaging wind gusts, large hail, and brief heavy downpours.
Counties along the I-95 corridor, including Philadelphia, Wilmington, Trenton, and Allentown, are likely to see the most intense storm activity. Commuters should be prepared for disruptions, especially during the evening hours.
Coastal Flooding Advisory
In addition to the extreme heat and storms, coastal areas are at risk of flooding. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for the Delaware Bay shore and tidal Delaware River during Thursday night’s high tide. Low-lying roads and vulnerable shorelines may experience localized flooding.
How to Stay Safe
Stay Indoors: Limit outdoor activity, especially during the hottest part of the day.
Hydrate Frequently: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.
Check on Neighbors: Make sure elderly or vulnerable individuals have access to air conditioning and are staying cool.
Limit Travel: If you must go out, avoid travel during storms, and be cautious of slick roads and low visibility.
Prepare for Storms: Secure loose outdoor items, and charge your electronic devices in advance in case of power outages.
Looking Ahead
The dangerous combination of heat and storms is rare for late July, and while more showers and storms are expected over the weekend, temperatures will slightly moderate. Weather alerts will remain in effect through Friday evening, with further updates likely as conditions evolve.
