A Texas teenager who got into an argument at a family baptism celebration allegedly shot the baby’s father after being confronted about firing a handgun at the party, according to police.

Leonardo Asis Campos Torres, 19, was arrested in the early hours of July 27 after gunfire erupted at a family gathering.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by Dallas-based Fox affiliate KDFW, Torres was confronted by 35-year-old Cristian Gabriel Montes after the younger man allegedly fired a handgun at Montes’ vehicle earlier that evening.

According to police, Torres and Montes are related. Both men were at the big event celebrating Montes’ son’s baptism.

The affidavit states that several witnesses identified Torres as the alleged shooter. According to police, the two men were seen having a verbal altercation that escalated when Torres allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Montes.

Torres allegedly confessed to the shooting after being read his Miranda rights, but claimed self-defense by grabbing a 9mm handgun after Montes allegedly attacked him, according to police.

Torres’ booking photo shows the teen with several bruises on his face, including two black eyes. It is unclear what caused the defendant’s injuries.

According to police, investigators discovered multiple spent shell casings on the ground near a Chevrolet Tahoe.

The affidavit contained reports from medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center who treated Montes. According to medical professionals, Montes was shot at least twice, once in the chest and again in the back. Torres may have shot Montes while he was walking, turning away, or falling, according to the police report.

Torres was booked into the Dallas County Jail following his arrest by Balch Springs police.
