A pregnant mother of five was killed after being run over and shot 20 times, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend.
Arel Dawkins was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action following the death of Braisen Cain, 42.
Just before 8 a.m. on August 6, Kansas City police were dispatched to the scene.
Police discovered Braisen, a teacher, lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
She was later pronounced dead.
Dawkins, of Blue Springs, Missouri, knew the victim, according to court records.
According to NeedToKnow, a neighbor informed detectives that Braisen had recently ended his relationship.
She claimed she heard gunshots while inside her home and saw Dawkins reloading his gun.
She also stated that the victim was pregnant with his child at the time.
Braisen was the mother of five boys, according to People.
In a photo lineup, the neighbor identified Dawkins as the man who shot Braisen.
Others told police that Dawkins admitted to running her over with his car before shooting her several times.
According to the video, Dawkins ran over Braisen before shooting her several times from close range.
He continued to shoot after walking away.
He inserted a new magazine into his gun and continued shooting before driving away.
He then left the scene in his car.
Dawkins allegedly confessed to killing Braisen over the phone to family members.
He was arrested in Springfield, Missouri, after threatening to commit suicide.
A GoFundMe page was created for Braisen’s family to “provide ongoing support for the five children she leaves behind.”
“Braisen was one of the most loving, kind, and caring people you would ever meet. “Braisen was loved by her students, families, and the entire school community,” according to the fundraiser.
“She always saw the best in each of her students and encouraged them to be their best selves. She was an incredible mother who always prioritized her boys and will be deeply missed by her family, coworkers, and everyone who knew her.”
Dawkins is being held without a bond.
