Proud Patriotism on Display Across Wyoming During Memorial Day Weekend Tributes

WYOMING, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A powerful display of patriotism helped mark Memorial Day weekend during an annual Revolutionary War Memorial Service held Sunday in the town of Wyoming, Luzerne County.

The event took place at the historic Wyoming Monument along Wyoming Avenue, where 227 American flags were placed in front of the monument—each symbolizing a life lost in the Battle of Wyoming, a pivotal and tragic conflict during the Revolutionary War.

The site was adorned with patriotic bunting along the fence, creating a solemn and respectful backdrop for the ceremony. Attendees gathered not only to remember the fallen but also to reflect on the importance of preserving local history and honoring the sacrifices of those who helped shape the nation.

“We often take for granted the sacrifices made by soldiers during the Revolutionary War,” said Sherry Emershaw, President of the 24th Connecticut Militia Regiment and a historical reenactor. “The freedoms and liberties we enjoy today began with their courage.”

Robert Schmidt of Old Forge echoed those sentiments: “Everyone should understand the sacrifices made by the people who founded this area. They endured so much so we could have a future here.”

This year’s service saw a notable change in location. After being held in Forty Fort in previous years, the ceremony returned to the Wyoming Monument, a site rich in Revolutionary War history and a focal point of local remembrance.

As Memorial Day continues to inspire reflection and unity, the town of Wyoming serves as a powerful reminder of the deep historical roots that still shape the values and pride of communities today.
