Riverfront Revival: Community Celebration Makes a Big Return to Lackawanna County

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The community came together Saturday for Riverfest, a celebration along the Lackawanna River that highlights local conservation efforts. This year marked the event’s return to springtime for the first time since the pandemic began.

Paddlers took part in a scenic five-mile trip down the Lackawanna River, starting at Riverfront Park in Dickson City and ending at Sweeney’s Beach in Scranton.

After the paddle, attendees enjoyed a lively gathering with live music, food trucks, and educational displays focused on raising environmental awareness.

“We love supporting conservation efforts, especially right here in our own communities,” said Steamtown National Historic Site Park Ranger Jessica Nielsen. “It’s about the bigger picture—teaching people about the environmental history and resources in Scranton.”

Meg Welker, PPL’s Lead Environmental Professional, added, “Our community roots program encourages planting native species. It’s a reminder to care for the environment, enjoy nature’s beauty, and protect it for future generations.”

Riverfest is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Lackawanna River Conservation Association (LRCA), with all proceeds going toward preserving and protecting the river.
