Rutter’s Invades Local Market — New Stores Set to Challenge Wawa’s Reign!

Here’s a fresh competitor entering the convenience store scene in our area: Rutter’s.

York-based Rutter’s, a chain of convenience stores and gas stations, plans to open 50 new locations over the next five years — some right in Wawa’s backyard, according to Michael Tanenbaum from Philly Voice.

While exact spots haven’t been revealed yet, the expansion will cover areas near Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Delaware, and Virginia.

Currently, Rutter’s operates 82 stores across Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia, with most clustered in south-central Pennsylvania.

These new stores will be large — sitting on properties up to 25 acres, with buildings between 10,000 and 12,000 square feet.

Some will feature 29-degree beer caves, wine selections, and even seating areas for customers.

Like other convenience stores, Rutter’s offers made-to-order meals including breakfast sandwiches and hoagies. But they also serve personal pizzas, tacos, soups, and sides, setting themselves apart.

Additionally, 21 Rutter’s locations in Pennsylvania include video gaming terminals, making them the state’s largest non-casino gambling operator.

Scott Hartman, president and CEO of the family-owned company, said, “Thanks to our food service innovation, focus on industry-leading wages, wide range of offerings, and top-notch customer experience, our locations are becoming customer favorites in both new and established markets.
