Sheriff: 2-year-old dies in Adams County apartment; two people are in custody

A 2-year-old died in an Adams County apartment Tuesday morning, and two people are in custody, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, the Adams County Communications Center received a call shortly after 9 a.m. about a 2-year-old who was found unresponsive at an apartment complex in West Union.

When deputies and first responders arrived, they discovered a child not breathing. The sheriff’s office reported that the 2-year-old was pronounced dead on the scene.

They were transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy will be performed to determine the child’s cause of death.

Deputies arrested Brian Moser, 23, also known as Terry Smith III, and Tien Hawkins, 25. Both are being held in Adams County Jail on child endangerment charges, according to the sheriff’s office.

It is unclear whether Moser or Hawkins will face further charges.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations assisted the sheriff’s office and the Adams County Prosecutor’s Office. The sheriff’s office investigation is still ongoing.
