Sioux Falls, SD Weather: Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Expected Wednesday

Residents across eastern South Dakota are being advised to prepare for unsettled weather, as thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast to impact the region beginning Tuesday evening.

Storms and Severe Weather Likely

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Sioux Falls, showers and thunderstorms will develop near and west of the James River on Tuesday night. Some of these storms may become severe, bringing heavy rainfall and the potential for localized flooding.

The greatest chances for storms are expected on Wednesday and Thursday, with pockets of heavy rain possibly leading to significant downpours, which could disrupt travel and outdoor activities.

Warm and Humid Conditions

Temperatures are forecast to remain warm and humid through Tuesday, with highs reaching the 80s. The weather will begin to cool later in the week, with highs on Wednesday ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s. By Thursday, temperatures will drop into the 70s. Overnight lows will remain in the 50s to 60s, contributing to the overall muggy conditions.

Clearing by Friday

Storm activity is expected to taper off by Friday, bringing cooler, drier conditions heading into the weekend. However, scattered showers could linger Friday morning before clearing completely.

Travel and Safety Precautions

Motorists are urged to use caution during periods of heavy rainfall. Residents should stay informed with local forecasts for any updated watches or warnings, as conditions may evolve throughout the week.
