The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, aims to help low-income individuals and families purchase necessary food.
In Texas, preparations are already underway for the delivery of benefits in August to thousands of families who see this program as the best option for obtaining food services.
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is in charge of both benefit delivery and program management.
Payments to beneficiaries are distributed on different days based on the case number of each person involved in the payment delivery, which is done in Texas via the Lone Star Card.
What products cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits?
Each state can impose its own conditions on the products that can be purchased with the SNAP program and the Lone Star card. These are the restrictions in Texas:
Buy tobacco.
Buy alcoholic beverages.
Buy things that cannot be eaten or drunk.
Pay any outstanding food bills.
Who is eligible for SNAP benefits in Texas?
Adults aged 18 to 54 who do not have children may receive Texas SNAP benefits for three months over a three-year period.
If the adult works at least 20 hours per week or is enrolled in an employment or training program, they can extend their benefit period. In addition, households with all members who are elderly (60 years or older) or disabled are eligible to participate in the Texas Simplified Application Project (TSAP), which simplifies the SNAP application process, according to the program’s official website.
