Speed during hailstorm thought to be cause of Wyoming tragedy involving large rig

CHEYENNE, Wyo. —  Wyoming state police say speeding during a hailstorm may have contributed to a fatal accident involving a car and a semi truck.

The accident occurred around 6:48 p.m. on July 30. That’s when the Wyoming Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle crash on WY 220 in Carbon County, about five miles northeast of Muddy Gap.

According to a press release outlining its investigation, WHP reports that a 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS450 was traveling west during a storm that brought rain, hail, and strong winds.

The Mercedes began to hydroplane, causing it to turn and slide on its passenger side. The Mercedes crossed the centerline of the highway, slamming into an oncoming 2017 Freightliner Cascadia tractor trailer. The big rig’s front bumper collided with the Mercedes’ front passenger-side quarter panel.

WHP reports that the driver of the Mercedes, William “Bill” Jones, 66, of Lander, died on the scene. Lisa Jones (65), also of Lander, was injured in the crash and was airlifted to Banner Health Medical Center for treatment. Both occupants in the Mercedes were wearing seatbelts.

According to police, the semi driver did not sustain any injuries.

“The Wyoming Highway Patrol reminds all drivers to slow down during inclement weather.” Wet conditions, particularly when combined with hail, pose a significant risk,” according to WHP’s release. “Slow down to avoid hydroplaning and don’t be afraid to stop and wait out the storm when it is safe to do so.”
