Springfield Weather Update Strong Storms and Dangerous Heat Expected

Springfield, Mo. – Strong storms are possible this afternoon across the eastern Ozarks, bringing wind gusts up to 50 mph, small hail, and heavy rainfall. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that the highest storm chances will be east of Rolla and West Plains, where intense downpours could lead to localized flooding.

Severe Storm Risk This Afternoon

The NWS Springfield office reports that the greatest risk for severe weather will be in areas east of Rolla and West Plains. These storms could cause brief periods of heavy rain, gusty winds, and small hail. As the storms move eastward, the risk will taper off to a 10–20% chance overnight, with lows in the upper 60s. Any remaining showers should be isolated and confined mostly to far eastern counties.

Dangerous Heat on the Way

Starting Wednesday, temperatures will rise quickly across southern Missouri. Highs will reach into the low 90s by midweek, but the real heat will arrive on Friday and Saturday. By the weekend, temperatures could soar into the mid- to upper 90s, with areas west of Springfield potentially reaching 99°F. The combination of high heat and humidity will push the heat index into dangerous territory, making it feel much hotter.

Health and Safety Precautions

Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors to ensure their well-being. The heat wave is expected to persist into early next week, so it’s important to be mindful of the risks associated with extreme heat.

Travel Precautions

Drivers should be aware of potentially slick roads in the eastern Ozarks through tonight, especially along U.S. 60 and Route 63, due to the heavy rainfall from today’s storms.
