The Social Security Administration’s (SSA) August 2025 payment schedule is proceeding as planned, with millions of beneficiaries awaiting their deposits. The payments for this month are spread out over three weeks, depending on the retiree or beneficiary’s birth date.
Despite the usual payment schedule, this month may surprise some beneficiaries. The Social Security Administration is expected to begin withholding up to 50% of checks from those who were overpaid and have yet to make repayments.
This follows a report from the SSA’s Office of Inspector General that revealed $13.6 billion in overpayments between 2020 and 2023.
The report stated that the majority of these errors occurred because beneficiaries did not properly notify the agency of changes in their income or health status, which could have affected the amount of their benefits.
