When schools close during the summer, many low-income families worry about how to feed their children. To help with this, the SUN Bucks program (also known as Summer EBT) offers extra food money for children who usually get free or reduced school meals. This federal program runs during June, July, and August, giving families much-needed support during school holidays.
In July 2025, eligible families will receive up to $40 per child under the SUN Bucks program, helping to buy groceries and basic food items. Here’s everything you need to know about how much you’ll get, who can apply, and where you can use the benefit.
How Much Do You Get from SUN Bucks in July 2025?
If you live in one of the 48 contiguous U.S. states or Washington D.C., you can receive a maximum of $40 per child in July 2025. The same amount was given in June, and another $40 will be available in August, making a total of $120 per child for the summer.
In states or territories with a higher cost of living, like Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico, the benefit may be slightly higher. But for most families across the country, the maximum monthly payment remains $40.
What Is SUN Bucks or Summer EBT?
SUN Bucks is a summer version of EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer). The program is managed by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and helps children keep access to healthy food even when school meal programs are on break.
This benefit works alongside regular SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits and is targeted at school-age children.
How to Apply or Get Registered
Some families are automatically enrolled if their children already receive:
- Free or reduced-price school meals
- SNAP, TANF or certain Medicaid benefits
If you are not auto-enrolled, you can still apply directly through your state or tribal SUN Bucks program. Each state has its own process, so visit your local program’s website or contact their helpline to apply.
Where and How Can You Use the Money?
The benefit is loaded onto an EBT card, which may be a separate card or linked to your regular EBT account. You can use this card just like a debit card at any of these places:
- Supermarkets
- Local grocery shops
- Farmers’ markets
- Online retailers like Amazon and Walmart, if they accept SNAP payments
However, there are some restrictions. You cannot use SUN Bucks to buy:
- Prepared or hot food
- Toiletries or hygiene products
- Medicines
- Pet food or non-food items
Also, SUN Bucks expire after 122 days from when the money is added. So it’s important to spend the balance before it runs out.
