Lawton, Oklahoma – A Flood Watch has been issued for parts of southern Oklahoma and northern Texas, including Wichita Falls, Lawton, and Ardmore, as heavy afternoon thunderstorms pose a significant flood risk. The watch is in effect from 3 p.m.
Sunday until late tonight, with widespread rainfall expected to range from 1 to 3 inches. Some isolated areas may receive even more rain, which could lead to rapid flooding of rivers, creeks, and urban streets.
Flood Risk Across Multiple Counties
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Norman warns that counties including Comanche, Bryan, and Pontotoc in Oklahoma, and Wichita, Clay, and Baylor in Texas, are at risk for flash flooding.
Low-lying areas, particularly around Lawton, Ada, Durant, and Wichita Falls, are expected to experience the greatest flooding threat. The heavy rainfall could overwhelm drainage systems in neighborhoods with poor drainage and affect rural stream crossings.
Flash Flooding and Dangerous Road Conditions
Emergency managers emphasize that even brief downpours could cause localized flooding, particularly on roads and intersections with poor drainage systems. Low-lying areas near rivers and streams could also be at risk.
Drivers are strongly advised to avoid water-covered roads, turn around at flooded crossings, and be prepared for detours as conditions worsen throughout the evening and night.
Safety Tips for Residents
Residents are urged to take precautions, including securing outdoor belongings, checking sump pumps, and keeping mobile phones charged in case of power outages or emergency alerts.
The NWS also advises that people stay alert for any updated warnings as rain is expected to taper off before dawn on Monday, but additional flood warnings may be issued if rainfall intensifies overnight.
Flood Threat Expected to Last Through the Night
The flood threat will continue until early Monday, with rain expected to taper off before dawn. However, if rainfall rates continue to be heavy, additional advisories may be issued. Stay informed and take the necessary steps to protect your home and safety.
