The 2025 Wyoming History Teacher of the Year award goes to Jackson Hole

JACKSON, Wyo. — A Jackson Hole High School teacher is being honored for her efforts to bring history to life. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History has named Cheryl Katz as Wyoming History Teacher of the Year for 2025. The award honors outstanding K-12 educators for their contributions to teaching American history.

Cheryl Katz has been a high school social studies teacher for the past 20 years, teaching students how to critically analyze the development of modern society. Her current courses at Jackson Hole High School are World History and Advanced Placement United States Government.

James G. Basker, president and CEO of the Gilder Lehrman Institute, emphasized the value of educators like Katz. “History teacher s play an essential role in helping students understand the past, build critical thinking skills, and develop a deeper appreciation for the people and events that shaped our nation,” he told reporters. “We are proud to recognize educators who go above and beyond to make history engaging, meaningful, and relevant in their classrooms.”

In addition to the state title, Katz received a $1,000 prize, a book collection, and other classroom supplies. She is now in contention for the national championship, which will be announced this fall.
