CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The bull riders arrived at Monday’s Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo ready for action, and they delivered. Twelve of the 18 riders who climbed on a bull remained for the entire 8 seconds.
Hayes Weight of Goshen, Utah, led the field with an 87-point ride on Dakota Rodeo’s Time Bomb. The 2024 reserve world champion is currently fourth in the standings and on track to qualify for his third National Finals Rodeo. With today’s victory, he secured his spot in the CFD Semifinals.
Weight was a point and a half ahead of 2023 world champion Ky Hamilton of Australia and South Dakotan Jestyn Woodward, who both scored 85.5 on Dakota Rodeo’s Pontotoc and Melanie’s Dream, respectively.
Rylee George, a breakaway roper, has been on a hot streak. In June, she won the college national championship for East Texas State University in Commerce.
On Saturday, she won her home state’s largest rodeo, the California Rodeo in Salinas. George was the final roper at Frontier Park on Monday, and her time of 4.3 seconds earned her the Quarter Final 3 victory and advanced her to the Semi Finals.
Team ropers Jeff Flenniken of Caldwell, Idaho, and Buddy Hawkins III of Stephenville, Texas, won the Quarter Finals with the fastest time so far (8.8 seconds).
The NFR veterans started roping together this season. They are ranked in the top 30, but they will need to win big at CFD and other rodeos before returning to Las Vegas in December. They’ll be back in the semi-finals.
Rodeo insiders predicted that high scores would rule the day in bareback riding. Former CFD champions Orin Larsen of Canada and Richmond Champion of Montana tied for first place with two-time National High School champion Tuker Carricato, both with 88 points. Three other players scored 85.5 to advance to the Semifinals.
Quarter Final 4 begins Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. at Frontier Park, where a new group of rodeo athletes in all events except bull riding will compete for a spot in the tournament-style format. The PRCA Extreme Bulls tour stop concludes with round two at 8 p.m.
