Republican Representative Max Miller announced on Friday that a man who ran him off the road while shouting “death to Israel!” and waving a Palestinian flag had been arrested and charged.
Capitol Police say the 36-year-old man has been identified as Feras S. Hamdan and is charged with Aggravated Menacing. “The investigation is still ongoing,” the department said in a statement to Axios.
Miller, who is Jewish and supports Israel, described the incident on Thursday. “The deranged hatred in this country has gotten out of hand.
Today, I was run off the road in Rocky River, and my and my family’s lives were threatened by a person who displayed a Palestinian flag before fleeing,” he wrote on social media.
“As a Marine, a proud Jewish American and a staunch defender of Israel, I will not hide in the face of this blatant antisemitic violence,” added the soldier.
House Democrats have been advocating for increased funding for lawmakers’ security, claiming that the incident highlights the need for it.
The outlet also reported that there is growing concern among lawmakers about violence across the country, quoting a senior Democrat who stated that many “are scared.”
Another House Democrat stated that there is “heavy demand” for personal security. Earlier this month, two Minnesota lawmakers, Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman, were shot in what was described as a “targeted” attack.
