The Sheridan Legion Baseball Board is attempting to be cautious about its next decision on who would coach the Troopers.
Earlier this month, the Board unanimously removed Austin Cowen from coaching duties.
While addressing and listening to a group of approximately 100 people on Monday (September 22nd), including current and former players, parents, and other coaches, board members stated that they are not in the league to discuss the reasons for the dismissal, just as a business is not required to explain why an employee was fired.
Members of the audience fired back, claiming that the board’s bylaws are out of date.
Cowen said in a phone conversation with Sheridan Media that he was not present at the meeting when the decision was taken and was surprised to learn about it.
He adds that he is humbled by the recent outpouring of support, but does not say whether he will return if the board reverses course.
“Coaching to me at the end of the day to me is all about building those relationships with your guys. Going to bat for them, helping them through their times and this time around, they’re coming to bat and having my back is pretty special and I have all the faith in the world, no matter what happens I’ve given it everything I can. I don’t regret a thing that I’ve done within this tenure and I am excited for our group of guys. I’m very excited for what we’ve been building here. I am confident that if my players want to play for me that I’ll find a way to do that for them.”
Board members said no official decision has been made on who will be the Troopers’ new head coach.
Cowen has been the Troopers’ head coach for the previous three years, and the team concluded this season as Wyoming AA State Runners-Up.
Cowen formerly coached the Sheridan Jets, who won the Wyoming A-League State Championship in both 2019 and 2021.
