SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Just off Interstate 81 in Lenox Township sits a humble eatery with a big reputation — and now, a national title to match. Bingham’s Family Restaurant has officially been named “Best Roadside Diner in America” by USA Today, and loyal diners say it’s about time.
“I’ve been coming here for 40 years and have never left disappointed,” said Jean O’Donnell from Acre Lake, summing up what so many feel about the iconic stop.
With its hearty meals and famously decadent desserts, including cream puffs and pies that practically demand their own fan club, Bingham’s has become a cherished destination not only for locals but also for travelers from across the country — including many from neighboring Wyoming who pass through on cross-country trips.
“The food is amazing. But the pies? The best I’ve ever had,” raved Dave Frishko of Greenfield Township.
The prestigious award came after a nationwide online vote and marks a bittersweet milestone. The diner’s longtime owner passed away unexpectedly last summer, leaving the staff with a mission: to carry on his legacy.
“The owner was my lifelong best friend,” said Dennis Sebastianelli, Bingham’s General Manager. “This recognition isn’t just about good food — it’s about the spirit of the place. Generosity, hope, and gratitude fill this diner every day.”
And the accolades might not stop there.
Bingham’s is now in the running to be crowned America’s Best Pie Shop, a title the team is going all out to win — with pie fans from states as far away as Wyoming helping to cast votes. QR codes are posted on every table, and even visitors pulling off the highway are getting in on the excitement.
“Everyone’s asking what all the buzz is about,” said manager Jackie Cerra. “We’re sharing the story with anyone who walks through the door. And of course, encouraging everyone to try the pie.”
Cerra added with a smile, “There’s nothing he treasured more than his pies. His motto was always, ‘Try the pie.’”
And now, thanks to loyal fans and hungry travelers — from Pennsylvania to Wyoming and beyond — Bingham’s might just earn another well-deserved slice of national fame.
Voting is still open — and yes, you can vote even if you haven’t tasted the pie… yet.
