Thunderstorms Set to Bring Warm Weather to a Halt in the UK

The Met Office has forecast blustery showers, heavy rain, and possible hail and thunder across the UK, signaling a stormy start to summer after a record-breaking sunny and warm spring.

Temperatures are expected to remain mild, ranging from the mid- to high-teens, a stark contrast to May’s record highs of 29.3°C. Scotland will see cooler temperatures around 13°C, while London is expected to reach 19°C on Thursday.

Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Expected

Meteorologist Clare Nasir predicts wet weather and stronger winds, especially along the channel coasts, with rain moving eastward and the potential for hail and thunder over the weekend.

After a record-breaking warm and sunny spring, which included the warmest and sunniest conditions on record, the UK is shifting to a more unsettled pattern. The Met Office noted that Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales saw record mean temperatures and sunshine.

Climate Change and Extreme Weather

Met Office scientist Emily Carlisle pointed out that the UK’s changing climate is leading to more frequent extreme weather events, including prolonged periods of dry, sunny weather followed by more intense storms. This pattern reflects a mix of natural climate variations and the broader impacts of climate change.
