Barrel Racing

Trainer’s Edition; Brandee Wardell

My Philosophy

My training program at Lone Mountain Performance Horses focuses on horses that are ages 3-6 years old. They are in training for barrel racing, sometimes pole bending, and spend a lot of time riding outside on the ranch. I spend their 3-4 year old year preparing them to run barrels as 5 year olds. I enjoy watching the horses progress and get better.
My “go to tool” as a trainer are pastures. Working them along the fenceline, dirt roads, hills, etc. They can learn a lot from straight lines, rough ground and open space. I am currently only accepting futurity prospects in my training program.

Mentors and Favorite Races

When I was younger, having grown up in Wisconsin, Shelly Mueller helped me out a lot. Now, living in South Dakota, Jessica Routier (Shelly’s daughter) is who I usually go to for advice or help.
My favorite place to compete is The Pink Buckle -the atmosphere is awesome and I have a lot of good memories there! The Ruby Buckle in Salina, UT was one of my all time favorite trips. It was beautiful, and had an awesome facility. Of course, I love all of the local South Dakota futurities, we have the best producers!
