A woman from the Twin Cities is suing Allina Health, claiming surgeons mistakenly removed the wrong organ during a procedure meant to treat a serious infection.
According to a medical malpractice lawsuit filed in Hennepin County District Court, Wendy Rappaport of Plymouth went to Abbott Northwestern Hospital on March 24, 2022, due to concerns that an abscess on her spleen may have ruptured. After four days of monitoring and treatment, she met with Dr. Devon Callahan, who recommended removing the spleen.
However, after the surgery was performed, a follow-up CT scan revealed a shocking mistake: Rappaport’s healthy left kidney had been removed—while the infected spleen tissue remained intact.
The lawsuit accuses the medical team of negligence and is seeking damages for the life-altering error.
