Hampton, Virginia – Intense thunderstorms on Thursday night have caused severe flash flooding across Hampton, Newport News, Suffolk, and surrounding areas. Several major roads and low-lying neighborhoods are submerged, making travel impossible in some areas into early Friday morning.

The National Weather Service in Wakefield reports that 2 to 3.5 inches of rain have fallen across central Isle of Wight County, as well as the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Suffolk, and Poquoson.

Additional rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is possible before the Flash Flood Warning expires at 1 a.m. Friday. Rainfall rates have reached 1 to 2 inches in just 30 minutes, overwhelming storm drains and causing creeks and urban streets to rise quickly.

Areas Affected:

Major Roads: I-664, Route 17, Buckroe Beach Road

Neighborhoods at Risk: Zuni, Grand View, Benns Church, Fort Monroe, Carrollton

Key Safety Advice:

Avoid Travel: Roads are flooded, and water levels continue to rise, especially overnight. Visibility is poor, making it difficult to spot flooded areas.

Shelter in Place: Stay indoors and away from flood-prone areas. Move valuables to higher ground to avoid water damage.

“Turn Around, Don’t Drown”: Avoid driving through flooded streets, as most flood fatalities occur in vehicles.

Power outages may also occur if flooding worsens. Residents should remain alert and monitor local weather updates for further warnings.
