Virginia Weather Watch Storms and Hazardous Surf Rolling Into Virginia Beach by 12 p.m. Monday

Virginia Beach, VA – A rough start to the week is expected for Virginia Beach, as thunderstorms and dangerous rip currents will impact the coast this Monday. The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Beach Hazards Statement, warning of hazardous conditions through the day.

What to Expect on Monday

By late Monday morning, thunderstorms will begin to develop along the coast, with showers expected between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. These storms may linger into the evening, and additional thunderstorms are possible later.

Winds will be coming from the south at 10 to 14 mph, gusting as high as 22 mph. These conditions could make local roads, like U.S. Route 60, slick and hazardous, particularly near the Oceanfront.

In addition to the storms, the weather will bring dangerous surf conditions. Breakers of 3 to 4 feet and high-period swells will create life-threatening rip currents throughout the day, with the Beach Hazards Statement remaining in effect for Virginia Beach and Eastern Currituck County, NC. Swimmers are strongly advised to stay out of the water.

Evening and Night Outlook

Showers will persist into the evening, and the chance of thunderstorms will continue past sunset. Rainfall totals are expected to remain under a tenth of an inch unless thunderstorms intensify. Local flooding could occur in areas experiencing heavier downpours.

Safety and Precautions

Visitors and residents should avoid ocean activities and stay out of the water due to dangerous rip currents. It’s also recommended to charge mobile devices in case of power outages caused by thunderstorms, and keep an eye on weather updates via NOAA Weather Radio or weather.gov.
