Washington Red Flag Warning: Thunderstorms and Fire Risk in Cascades Through Monday Morning

Spokane, Wash. – Fire danger is set to escalate tonight in north-central Washington as thunderstorms bring lightning and gusty winds to the region. A Red Flag Warning has been issued, effective from 9 p.m. Sunday through 11 a.m. Monday, due to the increased risk of wildfires.

The National Weather Service in Spokane reports that scattered thunderstorms could ignite new fires in the Okanogan Valley, Methow Valley, and surrounding Cascade foothills. The expected rainfall will be light, offering little relief, while outflow winds could become erratic and gusty, particularly near storm cells.

Communities near Lake Chelan, Twisp, Winthrop, and Omak are facing the greatest overnight risk. Fire crews are on high alert for fast-moving ignitions, and emergency officials warn that dry fuels combined with lightning strikes could quickly overwhelm firefighting resources if multiple fires start simultaneously.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to avoid outdoor burning, prepare evacuation plans, and remain vigilant for fire updates. Campers and hikers in the Cascades should be prepared to move quickly if storms approach. The gusty winds may also lead to power outages, as branches or power lines could be brought down.

The Red Flag Warning will remain in effect until late Monday morning, and additional advisories may be issued if thunderstorms persist. Local authorities are urging residents to stay informed and take all necessary precautions.
