Western New York Teen Faces Long Road to Recovery After Devastating Crash
A teenager from Western New York is on a challenging path to recovery after a serious car crash in late March left him critically injured. Lincoln Counihan, a student-athlete at Lancaster High School, was pulling out of his driveway when he was hit by a speeding car. The impact caused severe injuries that have required multiple surgeries and intensive medical treatment.
Authorities have charged 43-year-old Luke Darling in connection with the crash. Investigators say he was driving at high speed and under the influence at the time of the collision. He faces a felony charge of aggravated vehicular assault and could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if convicted. Darling remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on June 4.
The crash happened on March 30 and left Lincoln trapped in his vehicle for nearly an hour before emergency crews could free him. Since then, he has undergone 11 surgeries to treat extensive injuries, including multiple fractures in his hips and legs. Doctors expect he’ll need at least three more operations as part of his recovery process.
Despite the severity of his injuries, Lincoln is slowly making progress. His family remains hopeful and supportive, celebrating each small step forward in what has become a life-changing journey.
One of Lincoln’s personal goals is to regain enough strength and mobility to walk in his high school graduation ceremony—an inspiring milestone he’s determined to reach.
