While attending to a brush fire in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, many persons were shot, leaving two people dead

Two people, believed to be firefighters, were killed and others injured while responding to a brush fire in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and at least one active shooter is still firing high-powered rifles at law enforcement, according to Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris.

“We don’t know if there’s one, two, three, or four,” Norris said, as officers reported bullets coming from all directions. “We will neutralise this threat.”

According to audio from Kootenai County Fire and EMS via Broadcastify, the fire may have been set on purpose to attract first responders.

The blaze, which started on a half-acre, is still active as police try to put an end to the “rapid fire” shooting.

The number of people injured in the shooting remains unknown, and hikers and residents are still “stuck” on the mountain, according to officials.

“This is going to likely be a multiday operation,” Norris admitted. “The next few hours will be challenging…” I’m hoping that someone has a clear shot and can neutralise them because they aren’t showing any signs of wanting to surrender right now.”

The shooter or shooters are using “modern-day sporting rifles,” according to Norris.

The chief stated that multiple agencies are responding to the area. The FBI is also sending resources “to provide tactical and operational support” to the active situation, according to Deputy Director Dan Bongino on X.

Kootenai County Emergency Management has advised residents to shelter in place while others avoid the area.

Law enforcement officers rush to the scene, as seen in videos and photos. Video shows a police car speeding down the road, ignoring a barrier erected to restrict access to the area, while other law enforcement officials block the street.

Idaho Governor Brad Little urged people to stay away from the area so that law enforcement and firefighters could do their jobs.

“Multiple heroic firefighters were attacked today while responding to a fire in North Idaho,” Little wrote on X. “This is a heinous direct attack on our courageous firefighters. I ask that all Idahoans pray for them and their families while we wait to learn more. Teresa and I are heartbroken.

The incident occurred in Canfield Mountain Natural Area, a 24-acre park located on the city’s east side. There are numerous hiking and biking trails, as well as a dense forest canopy.
