This month’s Social Security payments will be made according to normal schedule. However, if the Social Security Administration (SSA) overpaid you, your next cheque may be a little smaller.
That’s because the Social Security Administration is set to begin withholding 50% of benefits in late July for those who have been overpaid but have yet to begin repayments.
There is no public figure for how many recipients have been overpaid, but the SSA attempted to reclaim overpayments from approximately 2 million people in the fiscal year ending September 2023, according to KFF and Cox Media Group, based on data obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.
Social Security benefits, which are primarily for the elderly and retired, are typically paid on Wednesdays. Your payment date is determined by your birthdate: if it falls between the first and tenth days of the month, you will receive payments on the second Wednesday of the month (this month’s date is July 9), according to the Social Security Administration calendar.
The remainder of the payments are made on subsequent Wednesdays, with recipients born between the 11th and 20th receiving payments on the third Wednesday (July 16) and those born after the 20th receiving payments on the fourth Wednesday (July 23), according to the SSA calendar.
Social Security recipients who started receiving benefits before May 1997 are paid on the third of the month. The same applies to recipients who also receive SSI payments.

What is SSI?
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a benefit program for people with low income or resources, those 65 and older, and those who are blind or have a qualifying disability.
According to the Social Security Administration’s website, children with qualifying disabilities are also eligible. Adults who qualify for SSI typically earn less than $2,019 per month.
Those who may be eligible for SSI can start the application process online, in person at their local Social Security office, or by calling 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. local time during the work week.
