Gainesville, N.Y. (WHAM) — Memorial Day weekend is in full swing, and across the country—including right here in Wyoming County, New York—families are kicking off the summer season with camping trips and getaways, rain or shine.
According to AAA, this year could set a record as the busiest Memorial Day travel weekend since 2005, with over 45.1 million Americans expected to hit the road or take to the skies.
Among them are Margie Asberry and her family, who have made it a yearly tradition to spend the holiday at Woodstream Campsite in Gainesville, nestled in the heart of Wyoming County.

“It’s just a fun, family campground,” said Asberry, smiling through the drizzle. “We’ve been seasonal campers here for—what is it—10, 13 years now?”
The Asberrys aren’t letting a little rain dampen their spirits. For them, Woodstream has become more than a getaway—it’s a second home. From bike rides to splashing around in the creek, the campground offers something for every generation.
“There’s just so much for the kids to do,” said Asberry. “They’re out catching crawdads, fishing—just being kids. It’s really family-oriented.”
Her granddaughter, Gretchen Case, agreed: “It’s fun because you’re not stuck inside. We go barefoot, play in the mud—it’s the best.”
Even though Woodstream has changed ownership in recent years, Margie says the welcoming spirit has stayed the same.

“There are so many activities, and it’s close enough that we can all come together, even if I only get a couple of days off,” she explained.
Founded in 1964, Woodstream Campsite has become a cherished destination for both locals and travelers from out of state, including those from as far as Wyoming, who are drawn by the same sense of community and outdoor adventure.
Whether you’re traveling from across the country or just around the corner, families like the Asberrys remind us that Memorial Day weekend is about connection, tradition, and the simple joy of being outside—rain boots and all.
