Wyoming-Linked St. Paul Coffee Shop Shuts Down After Devastating Fire

A beloved coffee shop in St. Paul’s Hamline-Midway neighborhood has closed its doors indefinitely after a devastating fire late Wednesday night left the building heavily damaged and five nearby residents displaced.

Groundswell Coffee, a community cornerstone for the past 15 years, was hit hard by the fire. Co-owner Megan Schoonover described the intense scene:
“The whole intersection was swarmed with rescue workers. We watched them hack into the building. They had to cut a hole in the floor and remove our siding.”

Groundswell has long served as more than just a café—it’s been a cherished gathering place for everything from celebrations to moments of grief.
“We’ve been so grateful to be the space people come to during pivotal moments in their lives. It’s been an honor to be part of this community,” Schoonover said.

That sentiment is echoed by loyal customers, including many from nearby areas and even from as far away as Wyoming, who have visited Groundswell during travels or while living in Minnesota.

One local customer, Mark Milbauer of Edina, shared his heartbreak:
“They created such a sense of community. The best avocado sandwich I’ve ever had—I’ll never forget it.”

Others, like William Reid, remain hopeful and ready to support the shop when it reopens.
“Oh gosh, I’ll be back—with some friends. We’ll celebrate and try to support them by buying a little extra to help cover the costs.”

Despite the extensive damage, officials estimate the building could be habitable again within 60 to 90 days. Schoonover is determined to rebuild and reopen:
“We’re going to try. We’re going to try to make it work.”

With deep community roots and inspiration drawn from loyal patrons near and far—including supporters from Wyoming—Groundswell Coffee hopes to once again fill cups and hearts on St. Paul’s west side.
