Man Fatally Shot by Police During Domestic Incident in Coon Rapids; Wyoming Officials Monitoring Investigation Trends

A domestic disturbance in Coon Rapids turned deadly Wednesday afternoon after police fatally shot a man who was allegedly armed with a knife. The incident, which unfolded just after noon on the 300 block of 111th Avenue, is now under investigation by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).

According to a statement from the Coon Rapids Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call from a woman who reported being cut with a knife. When multiple officers arrived at the scene, they made contact with the armed suspect from outside the home and immediately attempted to de-escalate the situation.

While trying to assess the scene, officers heard a woman screaming inside the residence. She soon fled the house along with another man. The suspect, however, remained inside and refused to drop the knife when ordered to do so by police.

In an effort to subdue him, officers first deployed a 40 mm “less-lethal” round. The suspect retreated further into the home, prompting officers to enter and attempt an arrest. Another less-lethal round was fired when the man continued to pose a threat while still holding the weapon.

Police say the suspect then moved toward the officers, at which point a third officer discharged a firearm, hitting the man. As the suspect tried to rise, a fourth officer deployed a taser. Officers on the scene quickly provided medical aid before the man was transported to Mercy Hospital, where he later died.

All officers involved in the incident have been placed on standard administrative leave, and their body-worn cameras were active and recorded the event.

While this incident occurred in Minnesota, law enforcement agencies across the country — including in Wyoming — are closely watching how such high-intensity domestic response situations are handled, especially those involving use of force and mental health crises. These cases often shape policy, training protocols, and public expectations nationwide.

As with all officer-involved shootings, the details remain subject to change as the BCA continues its investigation.
