Wyoming Teen Charged in Brutal Hammer Attack on 12-Year-Old Brother in Minnesota, Police Say

In a shocking case that has drawn attention as far as Wyoming, a 21-year-old man is behind bars after allegedly attacking his 12-year-old brother with a hammer in their Minnesota home, leaving the boy critically injured.

Faysal Omar Hersi has been charged with first-degree assault following the violent incident, which occurred on May 16 in Brooklyn Park, a suburb northwest of Minneapolis. According to the statement of probable cause, the assault followed ongoing conflicts and arguments between the two siblings.

Authorities say the young victim was found lying on his bedroom floor, bleeding heavily, by his sister. The only other person in the house at the time of the attack was Hersi. The 12-year-old reportedly identified his older brother as the attacker before being rushed to the hospital.

During a search of the home, police discovered blood spattered across the bedroom walls and a bloody hammer discarded in a recycling bin. The extent of the violence has shocked the community — and the boy’s injuries are severe. Doctors have indicated he likely suffered brain damage and, as of May 19, remained unconscious and on a ventilator.

Hersi turned himself in at the Brooklyn Park Police Department later that night and remains in custody at the Hennepin County jail as of May 22.

While this tragic incident unfolded in Minnesota, the disturbing details and potential long-term consequences resonate well beyond the state — including in places like Wyoming, where communities are grappling with rising concerns over youth violence and mental health.

The case continues to unfold as officials await further medical evaluations and prepare for the legal proceedings ahead.
