Wyoming's quarterback leaves home opener with 'upper-body injury

LARAMIE — Kaden Anderson is currently at a local hospital undergoing tests for what his head coach refers to as a “upper-body injury” after being hit violently late in the third quarter of Wyoming’s 31-7 victory over Northern Iowa Saturday inside War Memorial Stadium.

The sophomore quarterback, who fumbled on the play, remained on the ground and huddled for a few minutes after cornerback Johnathan Cabral-Martin came off the edge untouched.

“I don’t have full information on everything,” Jay Sawvel said during his postgame press conference. “It is not a concussion-type situation. The first check of some things that (doctors, trainers) did that I am aware of came back positive. So, we will see. “He will be sore.”

Anderson, who was starting his fifth game under center at Wyoming, completed 17 of 23 passes for 167 yards before leaving for the medical tent. He also threw two touchdown passes, the first of which went to tight end John Michael Gyllenborg for six yards.

The Southlake, Texas native made a picture-perfect pass to wideout Chris Durr Jr. in the end zone midway through the third quarter. Last Thursday in Akron, the same duo connected on the game-winning shot.

“It’s hard,” said Durr, who finished with 54 yards on four receptions. “I almost cried, you know, because Kaden is my best friend. So it’s a difficult pill to swallow. We’re not sure what’s going on, so hopefully he’s fine.”

“We don’t know Kaden’s status yet. We have not seen him. “I’m not sure where he is, but we’re praying for him,” Gyllenborg said.

Landon Sims, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound signal caller who spent last fall at East Central Community College (Miss.), entered the game and completed all three of his pass attempts for 23 yards. He also rushed for 12 yards, picking up a 3rd-and-long with his legs.

“I think everybody in the program — and I said this in, really, August — I think, has a real confidence in Landon Sims,” Sawvel said. “… But, you know, hopefully Kaden is all right and back. That’ll be something that will kind of get to everybody on Monday.”
