Firefighters are making progress on the Willow Creek Fire, which is now 73% contained as of September 8. The current 4,066-acre fire began just over two weeks ago, three miles south of Smoot, near the Idaho-Wyoming border.
Crews have worked diligently around the fire’s perimeter, extinguishing hot spots and strengthening fire lines. According to the US Forest Service, firefighters are continuing their efforts by removing dangerous snags and hazard trees that could endanger fire lines.
Wyoming Type 3 Team 3 took over command of the Willow Creek Fire yesterday, September 7, after Nevada Type 3 Team 2 had been in charge since August 24. Although Sunday’s rain and hail helped containment efforts, officials predict that dry conditions will return to the area today. There is no current estimate of when the fire will be completely contained.
All of the previously established evacuation zones have been downgraded to “ready” status. Residents are no longer required to evacuate, but they should be prepared to leave on short notice if the situation changes. To keep up with evacuation updates, click HERE.
